I found the connection tenuous, myself.
Lincoln and the groundhog are apparently characters in the man's dreams. Because he is not sleeping, he's not dreaming; and, when he's not dreaming, Lincoln and the groundhog miss him.
Yeah, I know; dopey, isn't it?

I haven't seen the commercial but I think Abe Lincoln suffered from insomia. Is the groundhog in reference to the movie, Groundhog Day where Bill Murray's character relived Groundhog Day over and over again?

It`s supposed to be far-fetched like that on purpose, because it`s his dream. He`s not able to sleep, so when he finally shows back up in his dream, they all say, oh we missed you because if you can`t sleep, you can`t dream. He took the medicine and now he can sleep.

Those are his normal dream staff, the people, things, normally in his dreams. That's why Abe says he hasn't seen him in a while.

They're supposed to be characters from his recurrent dreams. They miss him. Next time you watch it now, you'll catch it! Actually a pretty clever commercial.

no connection, which is exactly the point...dreams are so random, you never know what is going to pop up next.
