There's not too many 'mountains' in the UK (especially not ones to climb) but my favourite peak is Pillar (Lake District) via the high route on a clear day. Fabulous views...

I have walked alone and with people, but prefer with others as 1) You can share the experience and views at the top and 2) If anything happens, you've got back up.

Equipment? Good boots, and a breathable waterproof are essential, plus your map and compass (learn to use them) - once the fog comes down you're on your own otherwise. Don't forget enough food and water for the trek. Anything else will help by varying degrees (e.g. lightweight walking pants for easier treks) but you can get away with 'normal' clothes mainly.

Best to find yourself an experienced walker / trekker / mountaineer and get their advice...

My limits? LOL - Kilimanjaro nearly had me through altitude sickness... ;-)
