I was engaged to be married - but split with him about 7 months ago. Now I am trying to build my home by myself. Are there any guys out there that could give me ideas as to where do I start? My acreage is in B.C. I want to try to hire the sub-contractors myself, as I can't afford to hire someone to build it completely. I need step-by-step info. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

No...what you need is a general contractor.

1. Plans
2. Permits
3 . Form for concrete
4. Add Plumbing and electrical to form.
5. pour concrete

These steps should hold you over for the next year or two.

First my suggestion is that if u really can't afford to build a home don't do it yourself especially. U will end up spending more money then hiring a General contractor. I say that because u are not experienced and u will end up in the middle of the job not wanting this and that and ur sub contractors will leave u because they see that they will not make any profit. Then u will start all over again hiring the contractors. By any means if u are going to start building a house u first have to find an architect who is good and will handle all the city permits for u. Then if u still insist on doing it urself u start looking for contractors who know how to read the blueprints. Make sure these sub-contractors have license, work comp, insurance liability, and bond, because if they don't and something happens to their workers ur gonna be liable for them. So really look into it before doing it yourself. Some of these people who built their own home was either lucky or just good at finding the right people. I worked at a house who did his own GC and someone did get hurt, fell off the scaffold. Things can happen, and if u really wanna build make sure u spend the money.

I have built 6 homes, but I am really happy with this last one.
I literally put pen to paper, "several times", in designing my own home. Remember to group all of your Plumbing, as close to-each-other-as-possible, while still maintaining your preferred floor plan. This will save you more money than you realize. Decide on your Floor Structure now, so if you decide later, that would like such things as Slate, Granite, Tile, etc., your
Floor Joisting will be strong enough to carry the weight. Window Placing is important, you can design their placement to get great cross breezes, and this will save you on A/C electric charges. If you want light from a Window but, know in advance, you will never be opening that particular window, then select Fixed Glass here.

My Simple Suggestion, May Help You As Well, Here It Is:

When I had my design, including where I wanted all the Electric Plugs, and Fixtures, perfect for me, I took it to a "Certified Home Blue Printer". He had all the other answers, that one needs, to build & to build on raw land, even suggesting, "Tried & True Builders", in my area. From his suggestions, I was able to check on-line for references, and actions. Quite Honestly, the Blue Printer Cost, was very reasonable in my neck of the Woods = TN., Plus you get exactly what-you-want.

The Leg Work Is Fun, Enjoy & Good Luck.

I agree with Don, but would add that you should plan where you wnat the house on the land first. Do you want the morning sun in your bedroom? Which way do the breezes blow? Are there some really great trees you'd like to preserve?
