The Masons have never kept their existance secret. Many of America's founding fathers were Masons. What is secret is many of their rituals and greeting.
Many organizations do this. Elks, Lions, etc. These rituals serve to insure closeness and loyalty to fellow members.
Even churches have (some still have) secret rituals. The early Christian churches used to welcome anyone to the first part of their service, but ask non members to leave before the Eucharist. The thought was that some people would "not understand" the distribution of the body and blood of Christ.

Dear Lyla:
The Masonic Lodge is very much in existence. It is not a secret society, but rather an organization of men who do good in the world. The Shrine Circus is an example. The Shrine is also a masonic organization that uses a very famous circus to fund hospitals for children who have severe burns, injuries and other disabilities. The hospitals are free to any child who needs them, and children who are burn patients are frequently flown to the Shriner's hospital in Texas for treatment.
There are masonic organizations for women and children as well. I am at least a third generation masonic organization family (masons, eastern star, rainbow girls), and my daughters were members of Jobs Daughters.
You might like to know that almost all of the founding fathers were members of the Masons.

The Free Masons absolutely still exist. The secret is not so much the Fraternity itself, but its purpose.

Yes, although they're not all that secret.
The Masons, and their associated organization, the Shriners, generally have temples in most major American cities.

Yes, the Society of Freemasons. It's a Satanic cult, a creation of the Illuminati.
