Well... since most people answered male players, I'm going to go with Margaret Court. Look at the AMAZING NUMBERS

She won the most Grand Slam singles titles in history with 24 (11- Australian, 5 - French, 3 - Wimbledon, 5- US Open), she also won the most combined titles (singles, doubles and mixed) with 62. An amazing 24 singles, 19 doubles, and 19 mixed. It's hard to debate numbers like that....to say that Margaret Court isn't one of the best ever...you would be fooling yourself!!

All of this was done in a amazing 15 year period from 1960 thru 1975. She won the Grand Slam in 1970 only one of three women to win the Grand Slam; the others were Maureen Connolly and Steffi Graf; and she won 3 of the four grand slams in 4 other years (1962 - lost at Wimbledon, 1965 - lost at French Open, 1969 - lost at Wimbledon , and 1973 - lost at Wimbledon) . In 1963 she and Ken Fletcher became the only Mixed Doubles pair in history to win the Grand Slam.

She won 90% of her career grand slam matches:

French Open (47-5); Wimbledon (51-9); US Open (51-6) and the Australian Open (61-3).....In 47 career grand slam tournaments...she got to the quarterfinals or better 43 times!!! and her record against unseeded players you ask...146-2.

I don't think that any player puts numbers like this over a 15 year career. Margaret Court was the TRUE queen of tennis!!! No question!!!

The greatest grand slam match ever? There's so many but here are a few classic ones.

1970 Wimbledon Final - Margaret Court def Billie Jean King 14-12, 11-9

1973 French Open Final - Margaret Court def Chris Evert 6-7, 7-6, 6-4

1976 Wimbledon Final - Chris Evert def Evonne Goolagong-Cawley 6-4, 4-6, 8-6

1978 Wimbledon Final - Martina Navratilova def Chris Evert 2-6, 6-4, 7-5

1985 US Open Quarterfinal - Steffi Graf def Pam Shriver 7-6, 6-7, 7-6

1985 French Open Final - Chris Evert def Martina Navratilova 6-3, 6-7, 7-5

Just a sample....there are so many great ones. It's hard to choose!!

I'd say the greatest would have to be Martina Navritilova.

Women:
1. Navritilova
2. Court

notables: Evert, Graf, Wils Moody

Men:
1. Rod Laver
2. Pete Sampras
3. Bill Tilden
4. Jimmy Connors
5. Don Budge
6. Pancho Gonzalez

Maybe Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Martina Navrotilova, Steffi Graf, or Monica Seles.

Best Grand Slam match - Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport in the 2005 Wimbledon Final. So thrilling since Venus makes an extremely strong comeback to win.

Venus Williams is the best player. I mean there were times were i thought she was going to get stomp in the grounds but she came out on top. She beat Davenport when everyone thought she was going to lose.

Defended her title at New Haven by beating Justine Henin, Jennifer Capriati and Lindsay Davenport the week before the U.S. Open.

Successfully defended her Wimbledon title by defeating Belgian teenager Justine Henin 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 and predicted that Wimbledon would be a great place for her for years to come.

Won in Hamburg by defeating Meghann Shaughnessy, 6-3, 6-0 and in San Diego by defeating Monica Seles, 6-2, 6-3.

In the Ericsson Open final, came from behind to defeat Jennifer Capriati in a dramatic tiebreak in the final set, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4). The list can keep going but that just a few that I have seen her win. Sited from ESPN.COM

Yeah it's Pistol Pete by a nose from Bjorn Borg. John McEnroe, Mats Wilander, Boris Becker, Jimmy Connors, Andre Agassi and of course, Roger Federer, all deserve special mentions.

But these 2 stand out and the best game would either be McEnroe v Borg, US Open Final 1980, or Sampras v Agassi, US Open Final 2002.

I would go for the latter.

As of this point, I think you have to go with Sampras.

I would have to rate my favorite grandslam as the first time Agassi won Wimbledon (maybe the only time he won it?) because I was just getting into tennis then. It's my favorite moment though it's probably not the greatest grandslam match - I haven't seen enough to say though.

vijay armitraj said it best..."the only player i would happily pay to watch is jimmy connors"...i still remember with great admiration how he pulled out matches after being way way behind...those us open matches he played in the late 80's were classics..the best comeback was a wimbledon match against pernfors in which he came back after being down 2 sets and 1-5 in the third...connors still holds the record for most titles won at 109 and would probably have achieved a grand slam in a calendar year had it not been for the tennis boycotts of the mid 70's....many players will be argued to have been better than him but no player will ever come close to being as much fun to watch...it is sad that todays top players exhibit more of a precision machine type game instead of the guts, grit and creativity that was the core being of connors' game

the best grand slam match was the 1980 borg mcenroe encounter with a nail biting 4th set tiebreaker and borg eventually winning in the 5th 8-6...especially poignant since i believe it was the second to last grand slam title for borg but 5th consecutive wimbledon crown

Sampras has the most slams so he would have to be the greatest. The 1980 final between Mac and Borg (the battle of 18-16 was the best match I ever saw. Borgs last Wimbledon title.

The greatest Grand Slam match I've seen is Sampras' final game of his professional carreer. Wow, what a way to make an exit.

Time will prove that Roger Federer is the best of all time.

Indeed, Roger is the first tennis champion with an "All-Court" game that can beat any style of play.

Because of this, only old age will bring Roger down. And, Roger has many, many more good years ahead of him.

There are those people who would insist that watching Roger win year after year will be quite boring. However, I contend that his grace is a thing of beauty that no one will tire of watching.
