Hey buddy,
Congrats that u own a new Laptop.
Well since ur question was not specific with the COMPAQ Model...I quess that these solutions can help u out.
1) There are some Models with Built in Micro Phones. Check your control pannel , sound properties and check MICRO phone availablitity. If PERSISTS , ENABLE IT
2) If u have a Built in MICRO PHONE check Volume Properties and DISABLE the MUTE option.
3) If u are UNAWARE to proceed next. Buy a New Microphone and Plug IN!

If there is a mic in your notebook (usually on the top of the screen or somewhere above the keyboards) then you don't, else you need to get one. I suggest you look at your notebook manual...or something. It would also help if you include the notebook product name/model compaq notebook is too general.

You need a microphone or a headset. If they can talk to you then they probably already have one. Until you get one they cant hear you.
