You didn't say what games you were going to play, but almost all games need high-performance graphics. They all benefit from fast CPU's and lots of memory. If sound is important to you, you may want to invest in a hi-performance sound card.

Very high end games/simulators benefit from hardware RAID and multiple SATA or SCSI disks.

Internet based game? Get a quality network card. Are you flying a plane/spaceship? Custom joysticks/consoles are available, talk to any serious flight simulator fan.

The sky is the limit.

I'm going to cheese off many PC dorks by saying that top of the line is not actually top of the line. For almost $7000 you can get a dual processor chip from Dell (sorry Alienware dudes, Dell surpassed you last year with the quality of their systems) with dual 512 NVIDIA graphics cards and a physics accelerator.

Great! Except no game currently made or planned for the next several years can use that extra power, lol. I dunno. Maybe if you wanted to play Quake 4 on max settings while watching digitally recorded TV off a seperate monitor, you could concievably use some of that.

Pretty much the max you will use a 3Ghz chipset (non dual) with a single 512 NVIDIA graphics card and no physics accelerator (who the hell writes software that uses this thing) and maybe a 24 inch sharp flat panel is what you want. It will run you roughly $3 grand. Buy it from Dell. Best price, best stuff, no hassles.

Whoops. I forgot to mention memory. You want 2 gig. Not 4 gig (can't use more than 2 gig with a single application currently) and most certainly not less than that. Memory is both cheap, and extremely important.

Depends on what you want to play. But for best performace, you can create yourself an custom PC that will beat the hell out of all the consoles that exists on the market, but you will need a lot of money. Take into consideration that all gaming consoles are in fact customized PC's to be used in gamimg. ;)

The fastest Gaming PC's on the market are from Falcon Northwest. http://www.falcon-nw.com/

You can get rediculously powerful watercooled SLI rigs with overclocked processors and custom paintjobs on the case.

The "bragging rights" system configuration for the Mach V is over $11,000.
