Jerry Orbach portrayed Det. Lennie Briscoe for over a decade on Law and Order. I know that his character retired to get a part time job with D.A.'s office, on the short lived Trial by Jury. However I still thought they would have made some mention of his passing.

I think they either had him die of a stroke or, more likely , a heart attack. They addressed it by coming back from his funneral.

This is the only information I could find:

In 2004, Briscoe retired from the detective business, and went to become a District Attorney Investigator with partner Hector Salazar (portrayed by Kirk Acevedo), for District Attorney Arthur Branch (portrayed by Fred Dalton Thompson). His successor in the 27th Precinct was Joe Fontana.

In 2005, Briscoe died, after Orbach's death from prostate cancer.

They did mention his death before the final credits on a few episodes. They said In Memory of Jerry Orbach. It wasn't just in Trial by Jury, they mentioned it in a few other Law and Order episodes. As for Jerry Orbach's character on Trial by Jury. . .he was just gone one day and replaced by someone new. They never made an attempt to explain or unexplain his disappearence.

G'day Angy,

Thanks for the question.

Lennie Briscoe was reported as having died in 2005. The fifth episode of "Law and Order:Trial by Jury" called "Boom Boom" was dedicated in his honor.

On February 5, 2005, he was posthumously awarded a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series.

At his funeral Law and Order co-star Jesse L. Martin sang Razzle Dazzle.

I have enclosed more information about Jerry Orbach for your reference.

Regards

I saw his farewell episode repeated on TNT recently and it included an "In Memory Of" page at the end with a picture. He died almost the same day of the huge Tsunami in Indonesia so his passing didn't get much coverage.
