It seem like our cynical age won't allow it. Our mythological legacy to history will be pretty thin by the looks of things

I agree that the people fighting in any war may be acting in a heroic way, but look at Iraq as an example; They are not fighting for an honorourable cause, they are fighting so that their government can make money from the oil fields of Iraq

I personally think that Police Officers are heros, they are on the front line waging a war on crime which affects everyone . . . I am not talkin about the men in power and the politics but the everyday police officer that patrols on the streets . . .however I would be biased on this subject wouldnt I lol

Firefighters . . . no explanation needed

Doctors . . . without them where would be ?

Hero's have always been those who broke the mold to make the world a better place. the problem is everyone is sticking to the same mold and taking their cues from television and entertainment. Instead of forming their own opinions and working to make the world a better place. i think a great hero of today would be a leader who is not out to line his wallet or use the environment as a politcal platform. Some whose only agenda is to make the world a better place to live in. Where is this person? We need a hero who is not afraid of the media and will stand up for what is right not what is popular or least likely to insult.

I do think heros exist, but they do so alongside the politically motivated, who will not hesitate to demonize an act of altruism if it serves them. This depresses me, because I realize how very oppressed we have become, especially in the last six years.

That said, there are those who are more courageous than I, doing good work in the shadows. They are not afraid of polls. They are not afraid of being labeled or being knocked a few rungs down the ladder. They are innately heroic, the few who champion a cause (or even one human being) without wondering how it will benefit them.

I think Cindy Sheehan is a good example of a modern-day hero, a reluctant one at that. She marched to Texas and held vigil in the hot Texas sun, one grieving mother, and became a symbol for the anti-war movement, which grew dramatically in part because of her tenacity.

I think so, but the heroes of the modern world are very different from the mythological figures of the past.

What defines heroes of the past? Battles won? Monsters slain? Helping those in need? Overcoming adversity?

Fighting against social injustice.. Cures for diseases.. Volunteers in Africa or the South Pacific.. Literacy programs..

They exist, they just do so without all of the glory of those that came before them.

Heroes do exist but as you pointed out they usually get chewed up and spit out by a cynical and jaded society. That's why for me I believe in the Everyday Hero. This person doesn't look for recognition, fame or glory. He or she goes to work every day, pays their bills, loves their family and friends, suffers noble sorrows and treats all people with respect.
I'll take one Everyday Hero over ten larger than life Heroes any day.

Yes, but in today's world the definition of a "hero" can be very murky. Almost anyone can be described as hero. But the truth is being a hero's not about how many people you killed in a war or what superpowers you have. It's about character.

Yes they can! Please remember the 343 FIREFIGHTERS and police officers that lost their lives September 11, 2001. Those guys and gals are TRUE heroes! Also think about the men and women that are serving in Iraq right now, so that we may be sitting here on our computers....SAFE... Never forget those that risk their lives to protect you.

I think we still have heroes but just use other titles than "hero" People like Mother Theresea, Billy Graham, and others like that. People look up to them but now call them role models or good people rather than heroes.
