I mean I'm asking because I always thought he was a lad, what with him being called George and all. But the thing is though, he's PINK!! This used to bug me and my sister a lot when we were younger. AND confuse us. Was he just a little camp or something? Nothing wrong with it, just want to get to the bottom of it that's all.

He was definitely male, there is no reason why a pink fabric hippo puppet must be female just because it is pink. It probably pleased the makers of Rainbow to put in a character that was very poofy in a programme for children to young to understand about homosexuality, just as it pleased them to put in a character with a zip on his mouth with no explanation - I'm sure they just thought these things would be more entertaining.

George is now a used car sales hippo in london...She is now a 20 stone gizza bird...
She lives with Zippy who is a Gay film star.
Bungel is now a Drunk beging for change outside Grays Train Station.
Hope this helps..

I'm sure George was male. I don't remember it ever being clarified that his full name was Georgina.

I think he was just pink so that there was a character girls could like. Bungle was brown which back then was mainly a male colour and Zippy was yellow/beige/orange, a neutral colour either could identify with.

Actually I think a lot of people on here are on drugs, because as I recall, George was a puppet, therefor is made of material, not sentient life and therefore not alive and therefore neither male nor female.

It sounded gay because some bloke had his arm up it's @rse!

Alright pocoyo?

I think George was a hippo actually not a human.

A female hippo is a cow and a male is a bull.

I reckon he was a transvestite, he just dressed as a female hippo.

That's the whole point . He's a man who has under gone a sex change that's why they made him pink with a name for either gender, gave him a deep voice and a handbag. He's a transvestite!!!
