I understand that India is a place of non-violence, passive resistance, and the home of Mahatma Gandhi; but I also know that India is home to almost 1/6 the worlds population, which is largly empoverished. What options does a foreign traveler have to protect themselves if they were to be placed in danger. Would it be legal to keep something like an ASP collapsable baton, pepper spray, a pocket-knife, etc...? Anything else that might otherwise be considered harmless but useful to fight off a mugger?

Please take travel insurance and medical insurance. These will cover you. India has a very good justice system and if you are affected by any abnormal activities, you will be properly protected by the legal system. Your country's Embassy or High Commission will help you too in times of need.
