Superb island in Saronicos bay, the same bay at west of Athens! Thus, close to Athens, excellent place with classy people having their homes and villas there. It is a beautiful island that you immediately feel great being there!
Of course you can find excellent restaurants and tavernas, serving most of the Greek food you would like, especially fresh fish, fished from the area!

Hydra is gorgeous. They don't allow cars on the island, so you have to get around by donkey or bike. There are plenty of beaches, and you can find a restaurant every 5 paces. I'd recommend eating seafood near the beach.

Been there just recently on a day trip by boat from Tolon.. stayed a couple of hours.. impressing vieuws from the ferry entering the beautiful little harbour.. very busy however.. Greek food is fair to good in most restaurants, but because of the tourist caracter of the trade, not the best of Greece.. try seafood, that offers the best deal..
Better than a couple of hours would be a full day.. to stay any longer, so close in the middle of beautiful Greece, I consider loss of time..

Its great!.
You could compine the visit in Hydra, with other saronic islands, there is a boat, that every sunday, that makes a tour to Poros, Hydra, Aigina. In the port, they are great ouzo-tavernas with fresh fish, and little boats, that goes to nearest beaches, also they are donkeys! yes very traditional, to go in the top, the streets are made by stone, they are famous almonds candys, and great traditional cuisine. Dont drink to much ouzo! under the sun is risky!. But in the other hand, you will not drive long, there are only few cars there. That reminds me in the news yesturday, the perfect, of north greece has share in car drivers a little bottle of ouzo!, and give the message Alcohool and drive kills! i see this is negative publicity!.

I could recommend a better island - slightly bigger, only around 250 locals, 6 tavernas, a couple of bars and three beaches. Very little traffic, ONE taxi (1 car + 1 boat owned by the same guy), several small supermarkets and NO hotel (only self-catering in renovated houses). Easily reached by plane and a 1¼ hour boat ride.

Very classy. Wealthy Athenians live there and commute by hydrofoil. Very attractive - real picture postcard stuff. Bit expensive, however, by Greek standards.
