It's the idea that you're taking an incredible risk when you fart - It's like Solidity Roulette - Is this gonna be a safe one, or one of those where you turn green and realise you have to walk away...somehow...
So you lean to one side to raise one buttock higher than the other, so that in the case of emergencies, you can slam the buttock back into place and clench like you've never clenched before, smile sweetly and get the hell out of Dodge...

It relies upon on the fabric of the settee or chair i'm sitting on. If that's leather-based or something comparable that may not take in the fart then I lean. If that's fabric then i do no longer lean.

Biologically speaking, the rational explanation for this would be that to enable proper expulsion of air, the cheek must be suspended. And yes, I would presume people may well have a 'favourite' side to lean to.

I always thought it was to achieve a louder fart, depending on the surface of what you're sitting on. Plastic chairs amplify the sound of a fart beautifully.

well when you sit down and fart you can feel the bubble of fart come out that's why i side sit up

Because it helps trigger the sphincter muscle to relax, in the same way as it does when you sit on the toilet seat or cave men (& women) squat over a hole in the ground.

You lean to avoid the 'bubblicious' effect. Although why most of us seem to lean to the left is a curiosity.

good question i think it's to share there smell cos if you sit on it it's not as bad but a lean to either side and urgh smelly

My husband doesn't lean to any side, he sits directly on his butt and lets 'em rip! Vibrates the whole freakin' bed!
