Manila, Makati, and Angeles City are three different places.
Manila is the capital of the Philippines. It has been recently rejuvenated to its' old Latin charm, and many attest to its' being the 'only true' Eurasian city in Asia. Basically, it does have a few skyscrapers (but not as many as Makati), but mostly, Manila is a collection of Spanish palatial houses, government offices, and Catholic churches. The bayfront area is rated as the BEST in the world. Also try Remedios Circle, which is the seat for alternative nightlife. Basically, Manila is populated by Filipinos as well as Chinese.
Makati is the Philippines' answer to Hong Kong and Singapore. It is the Manhattan of the Philippines. There are lots of tall skyscrapers, bars, discos, and gigantic malls. This is the business capital of the country. A brief stint with Makati feels like a trip to New York. The malls here are Greenbelt Mall, Glorietta Mall, Oakwood, and Rockwell Mall. These malls are kind of upscale. Nice restos and bars can be found in Makati Avenue and Jupiter (although these are cheap bars - the decent bars are located in Rockwell Center and in Fort Bonifacio, both of which are in Makati. Fort Bonifacio is actually 15 minutes away from Makati proper. It is still under construction and is designed to rival Singapore as the regional center of Southeast Asia. Everything in Makati is trendy. Teens popping out IPods. People wearing the latest European/American fashion. The latest US music being piped out of music stores. Sleek cars drive past through luxurious gates of executive villages. Most embassies are also located here. Makati is populated with Filipino Mestizos (y'know, Filipinos who are mixed with Spanish and American blood), Spanish, Europeans, Britons, Dutch, Americans, Indians, Iranians, Koreans, Japanese, and almost every other nationality you care to imagine. (Makati is part of Metro Manila).
Other modern places in Metro Manila that are modern include Quezon City's Eastwood (yuppie nightlife), Metrowalk (student nightlife), Ortigas Center (bustling with malls, banks, and skyscrapers), as well as San Juan town's Greenhills Center (airconditioned flea markets). Again, all of these places are trendy, except for Greenhills. The Mall of Asia in Paranaque City, which is the third largest mall in the world and the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City (the fifth largest in the world), are also worth visiting.
Angeles City is a chartered city in Pampanga province, about 2.5 hours from Manila. It is also directly served by the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (in the former Clark Airbase). Unless you're hooked to cheap girlie bars, manage to avoid this place. There are also many Amerasians here, most of whom are left by the American GI fathers when the Airbase was fomrally surrendered back to the Philippines on 1992. Angeles proper is actually not an aesthetic place to visit, but the adjacent Clark Zone (the former US base), is nice. It features wide-lane highways with its' own airport, shops, luxury hotels, exclusive clubs, and duty free shops.
