Don't substitute cigarettes for food.
Choose to stop smoking. Each time you feel like a cigarette say "I have a choice here and I choose not to have one."
Tell your friends that you don't smoke if they offer one not that you're giving up.
Instead of buying cigarettes put the money in a jar and see it mount up.
Enjoy your food more as your taste buds get used to not having 1200 chemicals and poisons on them. Notice how bad your smoking friends smell.
Enjoy being able to breath better and deeper.
Overall just don't do it. It takes three days for the nicotine to leave your body and the craving to stop.
I used to smoke 15 a day and one day looked at the packet and thought "Why am I doing this?" I threw it away and haven't smoked a cigarette since. That was on 14th February 1975.
Best of luck for a smoke free future and don't forget if you just have the occasional one as ' it won't do any harm' you have become a smoker again.
I use to sell life insurance and pensions. In our questionaires we asked how many cigarettes were smoked each day. We did a calculation that every cigarette you smoke knocks about six minutes off your life expectancy. That's not conjecture, that's fact. So for every ten you smoke in a day you lose an hour's life. Every 24 days you lose a day. Every 24 years you lose a year. If you smoke 20 a day double it. Based on that we increased the premiums as the smoker would die sooner and we had therefore to pay out sooner. That's not forgetting all the nasty illnesses and diseases smoking causes. I've seen a smoker's lung after an autopsy and it's not a pretty sight.

First and most important - you must be highly motivated. 'Smoking causes cancer', 'Smoking causes heart and lung diseases' and the like seem rather abstact, don't they? Unless you have a serious health problem (and probably you still don't have such) I wouldn't say that imagining your blackened lungs would be motivating enough to quit smoking. It's motivating enough not to start indulging in the poison but once you've got addicted, it wouldn't help much. Sad but true - more often than not people do neglect their health and eventually suffer for making compomises.
How about this one: 'Smoking causes premature aging of the skin' - this one is much more concrete, absolutely true and unavoidable, believe me. In less than ten years you may not have lung cancer yet (chronic bronchitis is very likely though) but you'll definitely notice the difference when comparing yourself with your non-smoking peers. Tobacco is a Harmful and Uglifying Drug! Think about that. Think about the repelling breath. Think about the smelly clothes. Think about all that any time you feel like having a smoke. And really don't forget about health.
Why all that crap? Is smoking rewarding in any way? No.
But how to quit? 'Willpower' say non-smokers and they are generally right. However, tobacco is a Drug - it highly affects your willpower. You really don't want to be dependant but it's hard to quit. Don't get discouraged in the beginning if you don't manage to 'resist the temptation' occasionally but don't make too many compromises, either. It sometimes helps if you keep a record of your 'non-smoking achievements' - sth like a red point for a day without smoking, a black point for any smoked cigarette. Once you get 10 subsequent red points and no black ones in between you may be proud of yourself - you've passed the hardest level 1, from now on things will be getting much easier.
The key words are 'breaking the habits'. Figure out which situations tempt you to light a cigarette and avoid them.
You like a cigarette with your morning coffee? - Try having tea or milk with cocoa instead.
You like to have a smoke during the break? - Have an apple - it's refreshing and highly reduces the urge for a smoke (and it's healthy, you know;)
Chewing gum also helps.
Don't go out with smokers, stick to non-smokers - just for a while, until you are ready to firmly expess your lack of interest when offered a cigarette by a smoker-friend.
...
I'll stop the lecture here for it's getting rather longish. I do hope it helps you overcome the problem and have a smoke-free life:)

It's to quit making excuses and just stop! Try a little willpower and just keep the image of your blackened lungs and picture yourself walking around with an O2 cart in your mind's eye when your willpower wavers. :-)
