I believe the psychologists are milking the medical system. There are too many weak people who believe they need help. In reality, they could either help themselves, or allow family members to help them.

No, when was the last time any psychologist said something publicly? I remember one in the flower power era at a rally telling American kids to tune in, drop out and something. That caused some problems with kids dropping put of school and college and taking drugs. That was back in the 60's or 70's. In the make love not war days! lol
But most psychologists I see on TV are American psychologists over here in England trying to sell some new idea.

Given that psychologists study attention, that's a good pun!
blueice_1820: Psychology follows the scientific method and therefore is a science. The examples you give are from psychiatry as psychologists cannot define mental illness. All the disorders in the mental health checklists are determined by committees of psychiatrists.

Some who need them pay no attention - that is a problem.
It probably goes by the individual psychologist and the individual being counseled. Some people seem to go overboard - others take it in stride. It's a personal thing.

Who needs a psychologist/psychiatrist to drive yourself to the edge and back again, do a damn fine job of that without any interference whatsoever.
Now a mechanic to fix the brakes once in a while is a different story altogether. lol

Psychology has done far more harm than good to society. Psychology is not science. It is a philosophy. I love to study the mind and peoples behavior, but it seems that psychology has just given everyone excuses for bad behavior. You're not a drunk. You're suffering from alcoholism. You're not a rebelious child. You're suffering from oppositional defiant disorder. How are we supposed to truly help people if they are being fed all these lies that they are not really in control of their behavior? We blame bad behavior on social, biological, and anything else other than self. The only way to help people is by helping them realize that they are not bound by a disorder or bad childhood or a medical condition. All psychological obstacles can be surpassed. We do not need excuses. We need to realize that we are in full control of our actions.
