As a rule I find the original to be superior. With two exceptions. The Jimi Hendrix version of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower", and anything that Howlin' Wolf decided to cover.

No, I think they rarely are. Unless the original song was really obscure and therefore not very good. And sometimes, when they're done in a completely different style and are therefore sure not to be copying the original.
Although, none of the good rock songs should ever be covered by pop artists like Britney's I Love Rock n Roll. That was AWFUL!

Some... for example Big Yellow Taxi by the Counting Crows is MUCH better than the original... but Britney Spears I Get No Satisfaction is way worse than the original Rolling Stones songs... sometimes you just cant beat the classics!

I think most remakes suck but I'm a classic rock purist. I've heard some good blues remakes and seen some decent movie remakes of books. I like some tribute albums Godsmack doing Kiss or Limp Biscuit covering the Who. For the most part they suck the worse was Sheryl Crow and the First Cut is the Deepest and Sweet Child of Mine.

Has not happened but once, When Alan Jackson covered Steve Millers "Mercury Blues". Okay, maybe twice, the Jimi - Watchtower was better also.

Dixie Chicks totally fuckedup Fleetwood Mac.

Well, it depends on the song and the artist. I have heard remakes with different lyrics but the same music and vise-versa and they were really good.

It depends, I like to listen to covers and remixes, but it depends who has done it?
good example : Dreams by The Corrs is a cover song they've done it so well, but this year Deep Dish did a remix and it dowsn't sound good.

But I like them anyway, Art is Art right?

I don't think that it would be legal without the original artist's permission. Why wouldn't you just write your own material?
