The best start is at home. Take notes and look up paperwork you already have. [Out site of an adoption] Grandparents, aunts and other relatives all have different takes on the same history, write it all down-all names- birth/death dates and then look up birthrecords at county courthouses and military records are great logs of a family history as well. Take a genology class, its a serious project and takes years for the "truth" to come out as well. So you may find out some things you just didn't know about YOU! Your religion can help out as well, all organizations/fraternities have history on your family as well. Look for a trail and manytimes it will stop, so be patient. Or hire a specialist, it is expensive at times, yet it depends on your importantance in the matter. The best thing you can do now- is create your own family tree with medical history as well for your kids. Happy hunting.

Find a geneology library. I don't know what else to suggest. It is very difficult - I tried to trace my family tree, but finally gave up.
