Probably cheaper to film there. I think production costs are very high in the states. That's why they use *i think* Montreal in movies when they are trying to portray settings in New York City.

Non speaking extra's can pass as American
Alot of open space to set up your stages, scenes, and sets
Low populations allow the use of the actual sites when the business day is over w/o having to build from scratch.
its'F'n Australia, any excuse to go to an exotic location which is home to one of the worlds most famous nude beaches and naturally beautiful women, who would not want that, over the bleached, plastic, interchangable women of LA
