Australia, which has a lot of desert land, and is mostly quite un-inhabitable, was started as a penal colony of England !!! the British sent their criminals and un-desirables to Australia, and it was a dumping ground, for all the derelicts and scum of society, that were dumped there to cleanse England.. that is how Australia was started--not great--yet true--check your History books, if you don't believe me !!!

You may as well ask why they did not keep Canada, India, or any of their other possessions. There are many reasons: they learnt from the US war of independence not to overstay their welcome in places that wanted independence, it was difficult to run everything from London, and they could get most of what they wanted without direct control. The UK has been, and remains, the largest source of immigration into Australia.
