I just bought a 8-room 1,788 square foot colonial house that has old wiring and fuses in it. The inspector said I need to update the wiring and replace the fuse boxes with breaker switches. Before I call an electrician, I would like to have a ballpark figure on about how much this should cost. Any homeowners who have been through this, please help. Thank you.

at least 3 to 5 grand here in NJ. the inspector probaly wants the house brought to code. And it really is to your benifit to have it done properly. You really dont know what the previous owners have done to the house. I changed this ladys service once and after i swapped out the old fuse panel and installed the new breaker panel we realized that she has a new problem. The idiot before her had put to many things on just a few fuses and he took out the 15 amp fuses that were rated for the wire that is was on and put in 30 amp fuses because im sure that he was having the same problem that the new lady is having. in essence he created a ticking time bomb. an electrical fire wating to happen. so we had to back and expain to this lady that the breakers are now doing what they are supossed to do. But she really wastnt understanding. She totally tought we were trying to rip her off for more money by "creating a problem" . Even though i explained to her that i get paid by the hour not job, so it makes absolutly no difference to me what i do. Anyway my boss gave her "the *****" a really nice discount because of her great ignorance,

Hoboson makes good points, and the price is fair. Something you should know though. 100 amp service will certianly be alright with what you are doing. 100 amp service would meet code requirments for a home this size, even with an extra kitchenette. You just wouldn't be able to add much else.

My husband's an electrician. He says that since you'll need to tear out the walls due to complete rewiring, with the wire/new boxes/and panel, expect to pay as much as $5,000.

Sorry!

Replacing the service and existing wiring is very costly. $75 per outlet in your home plus $1500 for the service and costs of permits. You are looking at $5-10k.

the re-wiring will be costly.
for a new 100 amp panel, can be 400-600 bucks.
