"In 1992, a joint committee of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence and the American Society of Addiction Medicine was formed to establish a definition of alcoholism that could be used in a clinical setting. That committee defined the condition as a "primary, chronic disease with genetic, psychosocial, and environmental factors influencing its development and manifestations. The disease is often progressive and fatal...characterized by impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortions in thinking, most notably denial. Each of these symptoms may be continuous or periodic."
It's a disease that must be treated on multiple levels. That's why groups like AA have such a strong spiritual component to the program. It takes medical treatment AND spiritual treatment to really beat alcoholism.

Because it is a physical as well as a psychological addiction. There are certain physiological responses to the alcohol that the body comes to expect and withdrawal symptoms which are usually physically painful when alcohol is then denied.

It's an addiction, just like drugs or smoking. People "think" that they need the fix in order to keep going through the day.

Some people just don't have the will power to kick the habit or they're just addicts from birth because of their genetic make up.

Because it is a addictive drug far worse than alot of drugs, like marijuana. It also is very distructive to your insides.
