They won the world cup just once in 1966 which was also at home but ever since then, they had not never been qualified to any world cup final. Still, every world cup they are considered to be one of the strongest contenders but the statistics say something else. They have never won the European Championship either. So are they really a power house in football or like any other ordinary teams ?

it really puzzles me to think that England never won any European Football Championship.

if I go by the statistics and their performance in the world cup, I am of this view that they are just an ordinary team. Nothing so special about them.

I think England has a management issue, hopefully now with Steve McClaren in place as the new head coach and a new England captain to be announced soon, England are now looking at an interesting future under new leadership and possibly a revised management team with Terry Venables, himself a former England manager. The new captain has yet to be announced but is expected to be either John Terry or Steven Gerrard both of whom captain at club level unlike predecessor David Beckham.
Good Luck to England!

i dont think you can compare the team that won the world cup in 1966 with the current squad.
its not the lack of talent within the team (though i dont think the players are as good as everyone says), its the lack of teamwork
personally, im not a fan of the england team. i think a major problem they have is the lack of communication between each other. from what i saw during this year's world cup, their captain, mr. beckham, didnt have any significant contact with the ball (unless it was during a free kick). i think theyre lacking a mastermind, i.e. someone to come up with really great plays. also, theres alot of players who seem to have big egos and act like theyre fantastic players, but in the end, they dont show their supposed skills on the field.

I think a lot of it is down to the managers, and the English F.A. The perfect man for the job is a manager who has the knowledge, the ambition, the motivation, and the skills necessary to do the job...Yjere has only ever been one man with everything...Brian Clough...but the english F.A only want "Yes Men", and Brian wasn't willing to be...it was his way or not at all...England don't deserve to win anything as long as muppets are in charge...i feel sorry for the players, most of them are good enough to win trophies,

I think they are terribly unlucky to be constantly thwarted by internal and management problems. The team has very talented players..Love Stevie Gerrard...that always seem to fall short of huge expectations placed on them. They definitely have the ability, it just doesn't seem to come together at the crucial times. Hard to understand. I hope under McLaren these problems are put behind them and they reach their potential. Love them or hate them, football would not be the same without them. I wish them well in 2010.

England will triumph again, just you wait. It was just a streak of bad luck and bad managers, that has hopefully come to an end, and the Lions will see victory in the near future, England is a powerhouse forever! Hopefully, Terry will be our new captain!

I thought England could go further than being eliminating from quarter finals in WC, having consider you have the best squad in years. Sadly, blame on Eriksson. He's a crap coach. u need a real coach like Marcello Lippi.

They have good players; Beckham, Rooney, Owen, Gerrard, Terry. But to be honest, they aren't the best team. They lack in strikes, i think. Also in ball possesion.

well they do have really good players an they work well as a team, but it seems that they may have ego problems from all of their popularity. i agree that it is very strange that they are always held to highest regard and are favored to win, but the stats say otherwise. i guess the press coverage they get keeps them in everyone's favor.

I honestly expected more from them... I'm really interested to see how McLaren goes as a coach, I would have liked to see Shearer assist him. They have a quality squad... Have they named a new captain yet!?! If they haven't, my money's on Gerrard!!
