I have two aplple trees one is a russet the other is a bramley they are both the same age but the russet puts on 4/5 foot of growth each year

They do grow faster. But need a lot of pruning. Prune it back quite heavily. Take out branches that cross over and let light into the middle of the tree. You will get less apples, but they will be bigger and better quality. I have the same trees - they cross pollinate well. I prefer the bramleys, but I get gigantic russets after heavy pruning. They are very dense too. Amazing how heavy they are. It hurts if one drops on your head! LOL If you get mistletoe growing on them - leave it! It's worth a fortune these days. I haven't been that lucky. The russet used to produce a poor crop - seems to improve with age, the opposite is true of the bramley. Although, my gardener pruned them last time. He doesn't know much about gardening and even less about trees! LOL
