Do not pay attention to the answers given by the first two...they are ignorant and blindly nationalistic. As a Chinese who has lived in America for about 15 years, I have been exposed to large amounts of both cultures. American press is among one of the most opinionated types I have ever seen (the tendency is to omit information that gives face to other countries and only promote America). China nowadays is basically a capitalistic state; the communistic ceremonies are merely for the sake of show. People can criticize China for being too arrogant in accepting the fact that Capitalism works better for their society. Since China is such a large mass of land, there is a huge spectrum in the lifestyles of the populace. In Hong Kong, for example, the citizenry live in a very technology-influenced society (similar to that of Tokyo in Japan). If one were to travel inland, however, one would see that a poorer class of people would spring up more often. In short, there is no way to give a definitive answer to how people are being affected by Communism, even though such a system is practically dead.

Communism takes many forms. In the 1970's in China they had the Cultural Revolution and tried to get rid of all things Western... It didn't work. Their economy went down the toilet. Millions died. Then in the 1990's there was the student protests and the government had to crack down on them.. Killing many. Nowadays China has given up trying to be a purely communist economy and allows for free market enterprise. The result has been an economic boom.. China still represses free discussion of politics, religion and other dissendents. The internet is closely monitored. However, the Chinese people are doing better now than they've every been. So to answer your question, communism varies, economies vary, and if we americans became communist that wouldn't help our economy and we would not be any better off.

I'm Chinese and have been to China many times. From what I can tell, there is practically no difference between the regular life of everyday people influenced by the government than over here in the US. I really really do not understand why so many people 'freak out' about communism and jump to attack it.
A couple weeks ago I posted something about why communism was bad and I got a ton of negative answers..for some reason...
As for freedom of expression, I have never never heard of any REAL person in China getting arrested. You could do anything you want and nobody would know. By all means, hold protests and signs and yell for the world to hear. No one is going to look past you twice. Expression may be what most westerners think China lacks, but if you truly traveled there today, you would see that freedom of expression exists. The government to normal, everyday people are by no means oppressive.
But, to answer your question, Chinese people in general don't really get why communism is bad at all. Just like Americans think democracy is best, Chinese think communism is best. It is only over here that everybody hears the American's side that communism is bad.
As for North Korea and China, in my opinion, Americans and westerners have got it all wrong. They bring out the worst possible aspects and generalizations and apply it to everything. Whenever they put pictures of life in these two countries, they always have to show the dirtiest, worst places with people that are the poorest, etc. Without fully evaluating communism and jumping to conclusions, people surely will think communism does not work. But indeed it does! Look at China, with it's economy growing at a GDP rate of 9% -- faster than any country.
Also, Chinese don't worship communism. They just respect it, as Americans respect democracy. It is their own government and they are proud to have it--because for the most part, life in China can be very good. So, why should they have anything against it?
By the way, as people think China is entirely communist, it is also wrong. Although it does not seem like it, China IS the largest CAPITALIST nation. Free-market? Of course they have it. But then again, things have happened in the past that were terrible. Now, it has completely changed and the world needs to update their views on China.
I'm not really sure if I answered your question but I was just happy to get my view across, so thanks!

Are you wanting to know about communisn or socialism. Communism as outlined by Marx is a stable form of governing a body of people as long as no one tries to usurp power over the rest, which most probably will never work because there are too many greedy people in the world, and he even stared it in later writings. The socialist form that is in power in China and was the power of Russia is simply a few hold the power and the common man does what they say or else. For a good read I would suggest , If you haven't yet, read Karl Marx writings. They are interesting.

China is a police state. There is no freedom of expression. You will never get an honest opinion from a Chinese because it is against the law to criticize the government. Thousands of people are in prison for doing so.

Price controls keep prices down.
They don't mind shortages, because they can't afford them anyway.
They can't have too many children to support.
They live longer than those 200 years ago.
They don't have to tell the truth to foreigners.
