I recently got a job working in Ohio (I live in Pennsylvania) and today I was scheduled to work 11-7 but they were over staffed so they let me leave at 1. When I told my mom about this, she flipped and told me it was against the law and that I had to work at least 2 hours. I am not a minor. Does anyone know about this?

They planned on being busy today due to a huge promotion they were running, the corp. office told them to have plenty of help and they didn't need it. They sent more than just me home & they called a few people scheduled later and told them not to go in at all.

In jurisdictions, and there are many, where an employee must be paid a minimum number of hours when scheduled to work and who arrives and then the employee terminates the shift, the hours pay required is usually 3 hours.
However, employers often try to avoid making this payment by making it known that some employees are no longer required that day and they ASK employees if they would like to leave early. If an employee voluntarily goes home early the employer is not committed to pay any unworked time to this minimum.
Maybe this is the pretense under which you went home early.
In the future, if you wish to be paid the minimum required, if such a law is in place in your area, before agreeing to leave ask if you will be paid should you go. If the boss says no, suggest he get another VOLUNTEER and finish your shift.

Most companies allow workers who show up to get 3 hours regardless of how long they stay. Dont blow your top just yet, wait to see how the pay check comes out then talk with your supervisor about it. CALMLY! Point out that it is this far to get to work, gas is expensive, you could have planned something else if you had known you didnt have to work...etc etc. This tells your boss a couple of things. First you are mature enough to calmly talk about the problems as you see them, second youre mature enough to address them as a professional, third youre not going to blow your cool over every little thing and lastly you are willing to take a compromise...maybe a last minute call before shift starts (45 minutes to an hour) to keep you from going all the way to work, and it helps them keep their labor hours down...
There is a law that says that you have to work 32 hours a week to be considered a full time employee but there is not a minimum number of hours to work in any given time period.

According to the labor laws, a minor can work only 5 hours on a school day/night (when school is in session), and 8 hours on weekends when there is no school the next day (Fri & Sat night).
What comes into play is your scheduled time and worked time. You were scheduled for an 8 hour shift. If they asked you if you wanted to go home, and you said "yes", they are not liable for anything. But if they TOLD you to go home after only 2 hours, but you were scheduled for 8, they HAVE to pay you for that scheduled shift (for 8 hours). So I would look back and remember if they told you to go home, or asked you if you wanted to leave early. If you were told to go home after only 2 hours, they must pay you for 8. I would check with your state's labor laws to verify that, but I am pretty sure that is what happens.
As for the "working 3 hours", if you would have worked at least 3 hours of that shift, I believe that would have released them from having to pay you for the full 8 if they sent you home. But according to your account, you only worked 2 hours. Check into it. You can usually check into the states dept. of labor on the internet.
Good luck!

There are no laws stating the minimum that an adult has to work a day. The only laws I know of that limit the amount of working hours applies to minors.

I believe it may be a state law, however, in Wisconsin if the employer tells you to go home, they have to PAY you for 3 hours, if they say, well, if you want to go you can go, and you leave, You are allowed to, and they won't have to pay you for the 3 hours.
