Are they a threat to my computer?

They are small text files that track your activity on the web and report back to advertising companies. Then these ad companies will send you ads that are targeted to you based on the websites you have visited.

For example if you visited the Toyota website, tracking cookies would send this information and the chances are good that you would be bombarded with automobile ads shortly thereafter.

By themselves, tracking cookies are not harmful to your computer, but many people prefer not to have their web-surfing tracked.

Mainly, they are used to see where you go so they can target you with ads. Some carry spyware and others are used to recognize you when you return to the site. That is how some sites welcome you by name when you return.
