Average IQ has increased over the past 50 yrs or so, but it seems to be leveling off. Researchers believe that the increase was due to smaller family sizes, more interaction with children, the spread of literacy, etc. all trends that have leveled off. Since it was an average increase, smart people got smarter as well.

When more and more people are becoming smarter - that's sth called progress. Your parents might have been bright students at school but their knowledge would hardly meet the requirements your kids would have to face at school to be considered bright students. Smart people know that one needs to learn and improve all the time and they do so.

It's OK, there will always be morons around to make us look smart. Amazing how many people can't switch a computer on. Even more can't switch them off....

In Western society people who can't be trained to do skilled work or educated are becoming unemployable in the 21st century. it is just a waste of money replacing them with machines like road sweepers.

I think people today are becoming more PROFICIENT, but not necessarily smarter. Greater access to more resources (especially the Internet) allow people to get more information, but it does not necessarily make them more able to understand or analyze everything they encounter.

As far as perceptions go, there's always going to be confusion between proficiency and intellect.
