Clearly ignorance is the trouble.
If people were aware of the underlying unity of all things, if people knew a benevolent love of this unity, and so also a love for each part of it, then people would realise how much greater and more wondrous are those things beyond what they know, and they would be united in their wonder and appreciation.
Right now though, people are ignorant of these things, and they blame each other for the petty differences, which through their ignorance of the greater truth, they themselves have fostered.
Neither side of an argument knows the truth, but they both have their BELIEFS.
How much better would it be, simply to seek the truth?
"fools argue (and fight), wise men discuss (and seek to understand)"

The reasons are many and complex, but basically boil down to one of two things. First, people seeking advantage (power, money, goods, opportunities, etc.) over others, at others' expense. Second, are those who believe their own political, religious, or other belief, or their race, nationality, etc. to be superior to everyone else's, and who have no qualms in using force (physical or political) to assert their dominance.
Humans have advanced quite a bit from our more barbaric past, but in many ways we are still a primitive species prone to violence and irrational thought. Unfortunately, those in power are overwhelmingly of the unenlightened variety whose thinking is dominated by dogma or personal desire rather than rationality.

Throughout human history, we have been competitive. Take away every prejudice, we would still find a reason to fight. I hate this fact, but it is true.

We can, it's just a matter of allowing ourselves, and more importantly others, to see that, by learning, advocating, and teaching tolerance

To make the point even clearer:
The only way to respect ignorance is to ignore it, that is,
become ignorant.
