Big Ugly Slow SAFE cars...Something that is practically indestructible...My suggestion is a late 90s Ford Crown Victoria/Mercury Grand Marquis. They are Durable enough for Police and Taxi Service, Very unlikely to be driven too fast, and The safest vehicle in America to be inside during the eventual crash.

Anything reliable. Don't get them a brand-new sports car or anything too expensive. If you're planning to make the teenager pay for their own gas, it may be beneficial to them to get them a car with great gas mileage. Consumer Reports periodically releases a list of the best and worst cars (in general). I'm sure they have that report on their website. http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/index.htm

I had a 1980 Buick Century, and I am still alive...
My parents wanted something that was safe and cheap. It took a lot of gas, but that actually kept me from driving very far from home. Our Buick was indestructible.
It was such a nerdy car, that nobody ever wanted to be seen in it; hence I was able to focus on driving, and not entertaining my passengers. After all, I was lucky to have had a car in the first place.

First, it needs a 'stick' shift so you'll never have to say "I can't drive a stick shift" in an emergency.
Secondly, it should have the smallest engine available with room for one passenger which should be a licensed driver.

Yes, a standard transmission compact car. Believe me, you will want something good on gas.
