Teabagme is right. The brand is unimportant. Go with a 13 seer unit and hope that you get a good install. The amount that you pay for a unit doesn't guaranty that you'll get a quality install. There are many techs out there who lack the proper training so it's a crap shoot at best. Good luck.

Funny how everybody has an opinion.
I work for Carrier, and I am not going to tell you to buy one either. We always say NOTHING CRASHES LIKE A TRANE!
Couldn't tell you either way with Kenmore.

I say Janitrol or Goodman are good! They use Copeland compressors (if this means nothing too you, they are Good!) they use GE fan motors (also Good) They are much cheaper than any of the ones you mentioned. If you don't like this idea. Then I say go with a Tempstar! Seriously will save you some cash and its made by Carrier, and I have installed a ton of them. No problems.

Also I believe if you do buy the Trane you will not regret it, the same goes for a Carrier. The important part is have somebody who knows what they are doing install it!!!

Fortunately, I get to see all brands in action as they are installed for me. Low bidder- gotta hate it. But federal contracts.....

TRANE by far has been the best service equipment for several reasons.

We get RHEEM and Carrier, and all the permutations of others.... but look.

I LOVE the paint on a Trane outdoor unit. Someone told me- it's just paint. But it's not. It is my RUST and CORROSION inhibitor. it is what keeps it from faling apart in 5 years. The paint is a factory powdercoat and is a higher mil than any thing else.

The standard controls. It comes with standard limit controls, delay controls, defrost controls, even a bi-di line set dryer in the case. Most others DO NOT.

I have constructed over 4200 units of housing the past three years alone and my money is on Trane.

given all things equal like efficiency etc.. the piece of equipment or brand is only as good as the install. as long as the system is dry and free of non condensibles its really hard to say which one is better. some are just more easy on the eyes but doesn't make them any better. i have installed Goodman and janitrol and they are not the prettiest but have had no problems.
