This depends a lot on the available services in the area of your home or office.
First, if you have Commumity Antenna Television, you can have internet through their co-axial feed. ((No, they are not "Cable").
Second, you may be able to set up a wireless modem and rely on the availability in cafes, the library, other commercial areas.
Third, if you are within a mile or two of the switching office, DSL may be a better internet connection; check with your tele provider about reducing the home phone to "emergency only" (to maintain the line records)and buying the DSL from them.

There is also mobile broadband. Sprint offers it and I am sure some other companies do as well. It tends to be more expensive, but it is really good if you have a laptop and travel a lot.

So, cable or mobile wireless.

You could use your cable company, if they offer the service, but not for dial up, only broadband. And it will be more expensive, but that's life.
