Wow thats crazy, Im currently facing the same issue and I am almost at the point where I have given up on the system. I have been contacting on and off with HP Chat support and theyve been a real help in the past. Recently since Ive been trying to contact with them nothing has been resolved with my cd, dvd, and floppy drive. The only information they gave me was to replace the drive and it should start working again. I havent actually tried that just yet but you should, maybe itll work.
Im sceptical because ironically, all 3 of my drives have simultaneously become corrupt. Sounds fishy to me.. thus I have not replaced the drives just yet. Probably hoping for a miracle..
Quick questions for you.. how old is your computer? what make/model is it? Have you added any other hardware to the system? eg: ram, or swapped out any cables or wires? It seems this same thing happened to me soon after i installed an additional stick of ram. Very strange, nonetheless.. can anyone help us??!?!?
*****a few hours later in the day*******
hey! whats up?? i actually used this post as a wake up call to finally get my *** out to Frys to buy a new cd drive. I found a dvd writer 16x for $35 after rebates. Anyway, i installed it and now my cd drive works. Honestly, Ive been dealing with the same issue you have been having for months now. Ive checked in BIOS, Ive unplugged and replugged this and that.. Ive reset my computer, Ive done it all and nothing works. The only thing you can do is buy a new drive. Thats it. Good luck.
ps dont think youre going to figure it out. your hardware is shot. replace it.

Do the drives register in MyComputer? Do they still read disks?
Is your CD-ROM drive an actual CD-R/RW drive, or are you simply attempting the impossible? Were you able to write information using these drives in the past?
Make sure you have the latest drivers and firmware installed for your drives.
A problem could be the media you're trying to save on. Make sure you're using CD-R media and that your floppy disks are unlocked and formatted. Keep in mind that some CD-R's in a spindle are simply unusable defects, so try more than one.

Try modifying the settings i your BIOS, if you can access it. If not then, contact a vendor. Otherwise, if you're not sure, what you're doing then consult a profesionist. Or maybe, your diskette-drive and cd-drive data cables aren't in place totally.
