I have cable internet, which means my IP is always the same. Editing it will not work. I've tried releasing my IP for 24 hours, then plugging my modem back in and that doesn't work either.

Can someone please tell me a way that actually *works?*

I used to work for Comcast HSI, and I can tell you a few of things:

1. You do not have a static IP. It's also not dynamic, like you would find with a dial-up. It's somewhere in between.

2. You won't be able to change it without unplugging your modem for an extraordinarily long period of time (a week or more).

3. The only way that it will change normally is if the cable company renumbers their IP address pool and forces a reboot of your modem. This happens periodically; usually every few months or so.

4. The only way that Comcast will release your address and assign a new one is if there is a serious problem that makes it so you're unable to connect. If it's simply a problem that you can't log on to a particular web page, forget it. As far as other companies, I don't know the answer to this. You'll have to call their help desk.

It might help if we know what you are trying to accomplish by changing you IP address. Then we might know other solutions to your problem, also when you say editing it will not work are you talking about going into network connections, opening properties, selecting TCP/IP, openning properties, and typing in the IP with use the following selected, or are you talking about something else?

Also, I just though of something else, if you are trying to establish your internet connection the problem may be in the modem itself, try disconnecting the modem from the cable and the computer. Power down the computer and the modem. Leave the modem off for about 30 minutes and connect the cable line and turn it on leaving the computer disconnected. Once the modem has established the connection to the signal connect the computer to the modem again and turn it on. Sometimes the stored IP in the modem can get corupted and your computer cannot connect to it until it is reset and it cannot reset with a computer connected to it. Hope this helps with your problem, but then again I'm not quite sure what your problem is by this discription.

Actually you can change your computer's IP address.

You will have to put a router between your cable modem and your computer then create a private IP address for your computer. This will change your computer's IP address but
probably not the IP address of your cable modem.

This is pretty technical, I know.

If you need more help let me know.

Good Luck.

You can change your ip address even if it is static. Contact your internet service provider. I would like to suggest you to go for a dynamic ip

Unless you have a static IP address, your cable provider sets your IP address and they normally change it every so many days. You cannot change your IP address.

Most cable ISP's use sticky IP's so your IP shouldn't change very often. For your public IP to be changed would require you to contact your ISP and request that it be changed. But you had better have a very good reason for doing so.

What I would like to know is why you want to change your IP address? Are the numbers not to your liking?

Only way to get around it is to use a proxy server but it will not change your IP it will just mask it.

You can access the net via a proxy server. One that works good is anonymizer.com. The free version is irritating but the subscription version works fine. I forgot what the annual fee is but it's nominal.
