you may think it is selfish for adult children to put there parents in nursing homes but if you have ever had to care for one of them then you will see that after time it will become harder to care for them when they have a disease like alzeheimer's they will become harder to care for after a length of time so yes somtimes nursing homes can help with the care of the health of your adult parents when there health is where you cannot care for them yourself. if you have not been there and done this yourself then don't judge the ones who make a very hard choice how to care for there loves one.

I know several Americans who have taken elderly parents into their own homes for as long as they were able to care for them properly. But at some point, the parents' needs -- such as proper medical care -- can become such that constant professional attention is needed.
Let's say, for example, that the elderly parents had kids in their early 20s -- a not uncommon situation in the United States. So now, for example, the parents in need of care are over 90 years old. That makes the kids themselves over 70. This often becomes a situation where the elderly and infirm are trying to care for parents who are in even worse shape.
Please don't misunderstand. Your point is well taken. But, sometimes, there just isn't any other option.

Often it's because people have to work, and nobody is able to stay home to take care of the elderly. In the case of those who make enough money that that isn't an issue, then I'd have to agree that selfishness and convenience play a certain role in it. I'd make an exception in those cases where the parent requires special care that the adult child is simply not able to provide, though.

Because when our parents get dementia to the extent my mum has it - its very selfish ti NOT put them where they get the proper round the clock care they need. Also, people trying to look after demented parents themselves end up injuring themselves. That's what happened to me. I suffered spinal injury and will never ever again be able to sleep as lying down at night sends my left keg into convulsions.

In most families both the husband and wife have jobs and or have moved away. That makes taking care of the elderly difficult.

It may not be the children's decision...if I have something like Alzheimer's I have asked my family to put me in a nice home for people with the same problem. I love my family too much to put them through that. I've seen what happens to a family when they have to provide long-term care.
We did take care of my grandparents and was honored to do it.
Don't lump all Americans together....it's a case by case personal decision.....sorry if it doesn't meet with your approval.

my grandma.watched her mom die in her house she took care of her,i think its because of the generation we live in,its to fast paced and people find it easier to pawn there parents off to some home rather then taking the time to take care of them.my grandmother now in fact both of them live in a retirement home there in there 90s but there healthy .not really a retirement home i guess its a government assisted apartment plus my family lives in a very small town so they are able to visit.they take her to get groceries and stuff like that so she self suffient just cant drive....

I agree with you, Many Americans put their parents who are unable to care for themselves into nursing homes. Most of the time because it is sad to watch your parents become less able to care for themselves, and its easier to deal with if its not in your face... it is absolutely selfish
There are still some of us though... who would never do this. We aren't all bad!

Because "Americans" don't think they have time for loving. It's all fast-food, fast cars, one night stands and fast paced hard working conditions. In "America" some people just don't make time for family, parents, children, elderly, relationships and romance.
