There's no need...!

With all those 'tough', 'strong', 'honest' (cough splutter choke!) American warriors on our shores, why would we need our OWN hostile force?!! America has shown frequently that it's more than happy to invade, attack, or annihilate any country that annoys it - so why not let THEM do it??!

It will never happen. The procedure to change the constitution is very cumbersome. In fact, it's never been done before. Even the Liberal Democratic Party has a lot of members who would oppose such a move. The opposition parties would be pretty much united against the move. They would use every kind of obstructionist tactic there is to prevent Article 9 from being dropped. The debate would paralyse all other business in the Diet, so the business lobby would be against anything so divisive. The supreme court has already interpreted Article 9 as allowing self defence, so there's really no point to the whole debate.

I think the Japanese government is at least trying to define a new version of Self Defense. Many people were upset that Japanese troops went to help in Iraq because it wasn't a self defense mission. The Japanese are concerned about North Korea and other 21th Century problems and need to think about where they want to go. Currently, I don't think they should change it. They should keep the army for there only for defending but I think they should be aloud to do more humanitarian projects like they did in Iraq.

They might want to amend it to at least recognize the right of self-defense. The option of sending your troops into someone else's country might still be a little hard to accept, even though a purely defensive war against a foreign invader is a losing proposition. OTOH for political and economic reasons I don't think Japan's neighbors have much to fear of a Japanese conquest any time soon.

NO~☆Japan should not revoke article 9, why should we? Most Japanese would be opposed to it. I don't think they'd even consider it! Why not leave well enough alone...
