Plenty of modern bats DO need knocking in,,,only those with a protective plasticised cover dont, and they tend to be cheap and nasty. A high quality bat will normally require knocking in before use. Bats are expensive, so its always worth taking good care of them properly.
Usually, you should knock-in a good bat for at least 10 days before you use it in a match. There are special mallets which are sold at bat suppliers for the purpose, but the cheapest and simplest way is to be put an old cricket ball in a sock and bang it repeatedly on the face of the bat. Do that for about 30 minutes a day, for 10 to 12 days and then your new bat should be fine and ready for using in a match.
Not knocking in a good bat will only increase the chances of it splitting or cracking, so always do it.
