and mark this solemn occasion in light of their action 61 years ago and how it changed our world forever?

yeah - August 6 - I was actually referring to the day that 140,000 civilians were killed in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, and the world in general became a more dangerous place, with the threat of thermonuclear war..

actally "jim_h" I am "smart enought to read" - and purposely avoided discussing the context of Hiroshima or justification of it.. I am well aware that many more lives (esp. Japanese soldiers) would have been lost if the war had not ben brought to a close.

Nevertheless - August 6 DID change our world forever and brought the horrors of war and more specifically the threat to non-combatants and civilians to a whole new level - and THAT is what I am referring to : not the combatants per se, but the willingness to employ weapons of mass destruction on civilian populations..

That date is informally memorialized every year in the USA
by the news media and by American citizens who recognize
that WWII had to end with such a tragic but necessary event.
However a formal official yearly commemoration is not needed,
if only because history is important enough to be passed on
to future generations by their elders, not by their government.

If you were smart enough to read and could study history you would realize that millions of lives were saved by what happened that day, and you would not be living the free life you have today.

I don't think that is necessary. The bombs ended the war.We can debate the morality of it, but remember; THEY STARTED IT THE US FINISHED IT!!! I DON'T RECALL JAPAN APOLOGIZING FOR THE RAPE OF NANKING,CHINA IN 1937 WHEN THEIR FORCES RAPED AND/OR MURDERED 300,000 CIVILIANS.

If you're referring to Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day), that came later.
