Cartier95, I didn't miss anything. I read in this a.m.'s paper that the US and France are working on a cease-fire plan for United Nations to approve.

Not much.

Unless troops are willing to go in and force a cease-fire, or unless warships are willing to blockade Israel and impose trade sanctions, there's nothing really that the UN can do.

It's entire enforcement potential is based on the willingness of the member nations to enforce it's resolutions. And the US is involved in two other wars right now in the region. Sending US troops into Lebanon to separate Hezbollah and Israel will only lead to US troops being attacked by Hezbollah. Which will lead to the US striking back at Hezbollah, probably joined by the Israelis.

The UN doesn't have any ability to enforce its decisions, unless other nations get involved. And other nations getting involved just broadens the conflict.

Besides, it's generally a bad idea. Read the story at the link below for one analogy why.

The same as they have been doing since passing resolution 1559. Nothing but talk. The UN is a world country club that takes money from countries to pretend to get things done. If the United States were to do the right thing and pull out the waste could stop. What good did those UN observers do in Lebanon for 6 years. NONE other than to let Hezbollah build up a great arsenal to attack Israel.

I guess the usual happens...
Everyone keeps nagging about why one party keeps shooting at the other, and why god and everyone else is on their side.
CNN will keep broadcasting things live, and people will get fed up with it...
Lots will die, and more suffer... Extremism will have a field day, and western and democratic organizations will lose credibility...

Of course, the parties involved will refuse while this resolution only favours Israel.

Then the UN will be very angry with the parties involved, and they will write a letter, telling them how angry they are.

Nothing at all. Just some political statements are made and the stalemate continues.

They will not listen. They will do what they are doing now. The u.n. said no to iraq and look what happened anyway.
