I hooked a router to my dsl line and I don't get a signal

right now if you are using DSL and your computer is connected directly to the dsl router, you are probably using some sort of slip/ppp over ethernet to get the tcp/ip address. If you install a router between the two devices, you will need to revert to using a standard dhcp server on the computer. In addition you will need to configure the userid and password for your dsl service into the router using the ppp/oe service. If you still have the DSL welcome letter with the userid and password this should be a piece of cake!

You need a DSL modem to connect to the line directly. Then connect the router to the modem, and go through the router's setup procedure so that it recognizes the modem.
And, make sure you do NOT have one of those little DSL "filters" on the line running into your modem/router.
