Saving an image from the Internet to your computer is not going to give you a virus. Viruses are programs, and programs are not "stored" in jpeg and gif files.
But anyway, there are ways to get the images without downloading them. You copy them. You can either mouse over the image until it turns dark, then hit CTRL+C. Open up whichever program you want to save the picture into, then in that program hit CTRL+V. This will copy and paste the picture.
Or, you can right-click on the picture and then click "Save picture as..." Choose how and where you want to save the picture, and then it's on your computer.
Neither of these methods is technically "downloading." They both entail copying and pasting.
Does your computer have anti-virus, by the way? If not, you can get it free here: http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01.

If your computer is hooked up to the internet, then it's got to have the Antivirus/Firewall set up, you can get the software from your service provider, download from internet, or from a store. Windows XP has a firewall setup, I believe. I use Norton, but there are many other good products out there. It's unlikely that a virus will get onto your computer if you use the right precautions. Here's an article about how to avoid computer viruses:http://www.lifehut.org/2005/09/02/how-to-avoid-computer-viruses/
If the photo shows up on your screen, you just have to drag it to your desktop to save it
Your last option would be to sign up on a photo sharing website, like http://www.fotki.com
I'm a member there and they are great. It's $30 a year but they offer unlimited photo storage. When you add photos you can select "Copy image from internet site" and you paste the URL in there. The photos thus would not be stored on your computer but on another site.
