I believe you're correct in saying everyone is to sensitive why can't people look at you for who you are as to where you came from background or otherwise...I think what's most important is the content of your heart and mind then anything else.

Well, you have the extreme right wing who are cry babies about everything that is said and done by others. These lobbyists wanted laws passed to hush everyone up; yet, all that these laws have done is made people become more dangerous with their repressed anger. Political correctness is just another way to spell ''CENSORSHIP''. We have gone too far with political correctness. I do not know if you have ever seen the TV show 'Murphy Brown', there was one episode showing how petty we have become with the political correctness issue. Anyhow, the crew at FYI on the show was asked to be a panel for a discussion group. Well when some of the audience asked questions, a member of the panel answered. However, the answers seemed to offend everyone. For example, someone might have asked a question to Murphy Brown about being tall. She responded to a short by saying something like, ''I see that you are short and I am tall I just do not want to go out with a short guy. The man became upset and said, ''I am not short, I am vertically challenged.'' So yes political correctness has gone too far. It does give people a capricious system of screaming that they were slighted.

I think so - I work in a school and I see stupid things daily that make me sigh about how ridiculously OVER PC we are now. For instance , if two 'white' kids fight for any reason they are both told off etc and thats the end of it - forgtotten within minutes. BUT -if a 'white' boy and a 'coloured/asian/non-white' boy fights it is automatically ASSUMED to be racially motivated, all manner of questions are asked (which mostly confuse the children who are innocent- the fight is often over 'who took theball' nothing more) the parents are called in and a huge fuss is made. All because the school MUST be SEEN to be FAIR. When, in fact all the school are doing is drawing the childrens attention to the fact that racism exists when they were perfectly happy to co-exist without any worries. Our school is multi-cultural and on the whole - there are NO concerns on racism - if children are raised to be aware of the wider world and it's cultures it is simply not an issue. It's us adults who make it more so. Sad isn't it?

Absolutely! We have gone way too far!
So much so that we are on the brink of a new mental health affliction that might be called something like 'political correctness hyper-sensitivity'. Some people's lives have been adversly effected by political correctness to the point they they are marginally effective at communicating any longer. Still others use it, or try to use it, to their advantage. It's really a sad situation.
Thanks for asking the question though. It is a good one.

I think political correctness only covers for appearances. It doesn't attack the core of the problem, which is the fact that people tend to have prejudices. It just prevents you from expressing what you think, so it seems we're all in a better world. But people are just as prejudiced with PC as they would without it. So, I say down with PC, let everybody express their minds openly, and let the discussion begin once and for all, so that perhaps after a while we can get rid of prejudice for good. Too naive? Maybe...

I want everyone to joing a crusade against "political correctness". It's all thought up by bureacratic numbskulls who have nothing more sensible to think about than all the ways we might be able to offend someone by using the wrong language. I usually find that the people they are supposed to be protecting have no problem whatsoever and don't need protecting. It's patronising and insulting.
PS - My local baker no longer sells Gingerbread Men. You have to ask for a Ginger Person. What bollocks!

I wonder how many Americans who use the term know where "politically correct" originated. In the Soviet Union, there were people whose job it was to assure that things were done according to Communist Party doctrine. They were called "political officers," and they had amazing power over others. There was a political officer in every factory, office, organization, etc. And the Ideologue was a member of the Politburo. They could say what was Politically Correct because there was only one political party, and what that one party (communist) said was correct was all there was.
Now, which American political party promotes the concept of Politically Correct? Which one loves to act as if there is only one party, or at least only one for all [union] workers, minority races, gay people, religious minorities, etc., etc., etc.? See if you can guess which one I'm thinking of.
Vote Libertarian for a change!

Absolutely we have gone too far with PC! It' gotten to the point that a person is afraid to make a joke any more, because someone will be offended. If political correctness succeeds in removing humor from the world, what a terrible loss that will be.
