$400 is a bit of a stretch. You need 512 MB of RAM at least.

Dell has some sales now for $649.

You aren't going to be able to play games on any laptop that costs $400. Or even $650. You have to step into the $900 to $1250 price range if you want to play games on a laptop and even then that's just mainstream performance, enough for the Sims and some light Doom 3 and Half Life 2 gaming. The reason is that you need a dedicated graphics card, not possible at anything below the prices I have listed. You MIGHT get lucky on eBay but don't hold your breath. You're asking too much for such a limited budget. Sorry, that's just the way it is.

Nutty Prof isn't exactly right. You can upgrade the memory, hard drives and sound on a laptop (either through USB sound cards or PCMCIA sound cards). The ONLY thing you can't upgrade on a laptop is the graphics, you have to get a laptop that has a dedicated graphics card. This is something that YOU will NOT be able to get by without. My original statement stands.

It's very hard to get a decent/ good laptop around $400. In my opinion, you have to get the best (well, almost) laptop offered. The main reason is because it's almost impossible to upgrade the hard drives (memory, sound, etc) for laptop. Unlike PC, laptop is too small and complicated. You need to go to dell.com. They have really good customer service and you can configure the laptop as you want and they'll tell you the cost as you upgrading it. You have to prepare at least around $800-$1200 if you want to get satisfied and have your laptop as longterm investment. One more thing: if you're into gaming, you don't want play the sims forever do you? If you do, the sims itself will upgrade its graphic in the future and requires higher graphic card performance. Graphic card by itself may cost you around $200-$500 bucks. Go to Dell and ask them out about your situation. Good Luck!
