Water has taste and there are subtle nuances from place to place where you get your water.
Spring water has various tastes... depending on the spring you get it from.
Minerals in water have sometimes a bad taste but won't hurt you.
There are state agency's that you can send your water to for analysis.
Deep well water in very sandy areas are the best because of the natural filtration.

The simple answer is ' you just told us it is water!!!!!!'
Yet, another answer could be this...
Since your question is predicated on a false assumption... we must depend on the truth and/or our other senses to determine 'how to know it is water.' So, since water DOES have taste, we may know from that. Our Body knows even if we do not hear what it tells us.
Looking at it may help. Any sign of smell? What does it feel like? Breaking it down into elements could do it. Maybe try asking it : )

no additives - it's pure. It could have taste if you get it from the wrong place. IE- if you drink saltwater, it will activate your taste buds that taste salt - or drink pool water and see how that tastes
