I believe we should keep our Queen & the prominent members of the Royal famiy, but as for the hangers on who do nothing of value, then they should not receive anything from the Civil List. Many people say to get rid of the Royal Family, they cost too much, but they say this without knowing any of the facts. The Queen, Charles & Anne especially bring a great deal of money & commerce into this country. They also create alot of tourism, which brings in vast amounts of money. If we abbolished the Monarchy, then, as well as having a Prime Minister, we would need to put in place a President as in France etc who would not be of any commercial/tourism use & who would cost a fortune. Our Monarcy is probably the oldest & greatest in the world, and we are the envy of many countries for what we have in place here. God save the Queen & long may she & her descentants reign.....

If the vote was for them to stay instead of the Government and to rule the country, then I say keep, because I believe they would do a better job, being more grounded with reality than the politicians.

But really, why get rid of them? Do they cause harm?
Most English people see the Royal Family as a symbol of England, and as rulers, even though they are not. Having a monarch in England is part of England itself, and in some way gives the English people a sense of being English (or should I say British).

In short: keep.

Yes, I think we should. We would be no better off with an elected president, he wouldn't be any cheaper than the monarchy, and possibly more expensive (the italians for instance pay almost twice as much for their president as we do for the monarchy). Besides, if we had an elected head of state, that would mean yet more tedious elections. Anyway, why are you so anxious to swop the Queen for an elected nonentity? Do you really think life will be better with some undistinguished and totally forgetable president installed in Buckingham Palace? Why? And in answer to the outrageous comment posted above, the royal family most certainly did NOT support the Nazis during WW2.

I enjoy the hearing about the British Royal Family. I say, "keep them!"

I'd keep it... just for traditional reasons. How many people can trace their ancestors back thousands of years the way that the royal family can. Not only that but their ancestors were very significant to the development of what is now the modern UK. There's nothing wrong with keeping traditions. I just don't think that they should have ANY power. They should be there just for show.

Pension them off over time, they will eventually become like the Dutch Royal Family.

I would had got rid of it a long time ago. The arguments for 'tourism' don't add up any more. Who REALLY expects to get an audience with Liz W with tea and crumpets just because they paid for an EasyJet ticket?
And as for the Mail...shut up about Diana! The woman died nearly 9 years ago...get over it!

Keep the Royal family, and get rid of all the politicians and other wastes of money associated with them.

Keep them as they are one of the biggest Tourist Attractions in London!

I do wish that William would take the throne though if the Queen ever passes on or abdicates. It would do us good to have a younger King.
