Don't think it's genuinely funny when somebody farts in a communal or public setting. It's more like embarrassing. We are reminded of body parts and functions we have been taught all our lives to pretend don't exist.
So we often react to embarrassment the same way we react to humor. A snide snicker or a wispy giggle. It runs deep in the American Way. Truth and Justice, too. Come to think of it, I wonder if Superman farts? Maybe that's how he flies!

Humans spent most of the last 50,000 years as hunter gatherers. (Creationists, please read 6 months in the Garden of Eden). Most of our habits and instincts are based on the reactions that help with hunting and gathering. Those without those reactions tended to get eaten or poisoned.
The things that tend to make men snigger are actually related to things that would be dangerous when you're hunting. If you're trying to stalk a buffalo, farting will alert it to your presence, and it will help the lions find you. The louder and smellier, the worse your chances of being eaten. That's why we snigger. Lavatories, sex (especially gay), deformities and death are also part of lad's humour.
Women, on the other hand, tended not to go hunting. That's why they've got their own ideas about what's funny.

If you analyse what's funny and try to explain funny things then they become no longer funny that goes for all funny things so stop looking for explanations to funny things and just laugh your head off and blame your own fart on the dog next to you its the only way to fly.

It's related to embarrassment, I think. There is a theory that we laugh at practical jokes because we're relieved it didn't happen to us. If someone farts and is embarrassed about it, maybe we find it funny because we're glad it wasn't us. Or we are embarrassed because we are with the person. If they are blatant and proud about it, it's usually not funny.

because as children we thought that was funny, but the older we get we are taught that this is wrong to laugh at because this might embarrass someone. so when as adults we smirk its our inner child coming out.

Why is anything funny that we find funny? I don't find just any farts funny, though...there's a timing to it, an art.

I can't think of anything funnier, I feel better as well after a good, hearty fart.
