It used to be a part of the province of Syria which was part of the Turkish Empire until the end of WW1.
When the empire was broken up after the defeat of Turkey by the British, several new states were created in the Middle East.
Of these states, France was given a mandate by the League of nations to administer Syria and Lebanon while Britain received the mandate for Iraq, Jordan and Palestine.
The French administration of Lebanon caused a lot of unrest as they attempted to incorporate it into their empire against the will of the lebanese.
Under pressure from the British and USA among others the lebanese were eventually allowed to form their own government with the head of state always being christian and the prime minister always being muslim.
Between the two world wars the country became stable and prosperous.
After WW2 the creation of the State of Israel by illegal jewish immigrants and the ethnic cleansing of christian and muslim arabs from Palestine was the great destabilisng event in the Middle East and the region has been in a constant state of tension ever since.
Israel has attacked its neighbours several times since then and the arabs have retaliated in an attempt tp regain their land but without success because they are always disunited whereas Israel has always had the unwavering support of the USA.
In the 1970s and 80s the Palestine Liberation Organisation based itself in Lebanon and carried out incursions into Israel.
The Israelis retaliated by attacking Southern Lebanon and Beirut and this situation eventually led to civil war in the whole of Lebanon divided eventually on religious difference with the left- wing muslims supported by Syria fighting the right-wing christians supported by Israel and the CIA.
Eventually Israel invaded the whole of Lebanon and surrounded. the remnants of the PLO in Beirut.
The killing and the destruction were immense and eventually a truce was arranged by the UN and the remaining PLO fighters were evacuated on US ships to Tunis This was on the understanding that the Palestinian civilians left behind would be safe.
As soon as the fighters left, the Sabra and Shatila camps in Beirut where the remaining palestians lived, were surrounded by christian militia and a terrible massacre took place of old men, women and children while the Israeli army stood by and did nothing.
The Israelis wre criticised by their own people and the rest of the world for this atrocity and public opinion caused them to withdraw from Lebanon.
The civil war eventually ended with neither side winning and a new government was set elected.
Since then Lebanon had made great progress in rebuilding itself into something approaching the prosperous and peaceful country it used to be until this latest attack by Israel.

I know that about half the population is Christian and the other half is Islam. I know that when France got a mandate on the country after WWI they favoured the Christians. It was once part of the Ottoman Empire. That's pretty much it.

i know that Beruit has been the center of wars.
That is really about it.
