I have a 97 dodge caravan and I believe I have a transmisson problem.
My gears are shifting okay its just that I have lost power when I give the car some gas, also my trans fluid is brown and I was told that there are metal flakes in the fluid, maybe some burning going on.

Should I get a trans tune up or just get a new trans.

I have taken it to a few different places and have gotten so many different answers. I have had a diagnostics done, but the only thing that was on there was the o2 censor.

The loss of power is probably the transmission slipping
I would recommend getting a new trans especially if there are metal flakes in the fluid, and brown is usually burnt clutches,..

I worked at a transmission shop for years. What we always did was test drive the vehicle first and check it for codes on the computer. If there was a code in the computer we could narrow it down to it being something wrong internally in the trans. or a electical sensor, computer prob. etc. Certain codes call for you to pull the bottom pan off the transmission. Also we would pull the pan off if your fluid looked brown or like motor oil. We would do all of that free of charge. Then give the customer an estimate of what it would cost to pull out the trans., tear it apart, access what parts it needed, and reeinstall it back in the vehicle. Because if your trans. needs things like a new pump, valve body, planetary gears etc. it will make the job more expensive. A transmission isn't like an engine to where you can remove a few parts to fix the problem. I recommend taking it to a place like Cottman Transmission and have them access what exactly is going on with your van.

ok this is your best bet dont have you trans rebuild that type of trans(a604)are naturally JUNK!18% of those trans made it out of warranty the other 82% went back to the dealer. you can although get a brand new factory transmission for about 1,200 buck then have a shop R&R(remove reinstall) it for anywhere from 200-400 bucks go to the link bellow to find a good shop
