It's not poetry I hate, so I am incompatiable with your debate. I love the word and emotion, so poetry has my devotion!

I've never read poetry by a high school or college student that wasn't utterly vapid and useless garbage. It's really really tough to write beautiful and engaging poetry and that's why there's only a few poets most people can name. Odds are, if you are between 15 and 25 and write poetry...

IT IS AWFUL AND DO NOT SHARE IT WITH ANYONE ELSE.

Most any song lyrics you hear on the radio are just as bad if not even worse.

No, I don't hate poetry.

But I don't enjoy it as much as I enjoy fiction and drama. That's probably just laziness on my part, since appreciating serious poetry requires a great deal of effort and focus. This isn't a judgment, just a preference.

If I'm in the mood for highly charged and evocative language, I'll read a play by Sam Shepard or Shakespeare, or I'll listen to some Bob Dylan.

If you want to give poetry another try, read John Keats' "Ode to a Nightingale;" that's a favorite of mine. Or if you want something more recent, try Robinson Jeffers' "Hurt Hawks." That one's about a man finding a hawk with a broken wing and putting it out of its misery and humiliation with a shotgun. Powerful stuff.

No. I LOVE poetry. I won't say anything mean, because that's your opinion and your intitled to state that. But I don't hate it. I write A LOT of poetry, I'm not going to hate it.

I hate the poetry you have to read in school and then dissect to find motifs, symbols, themes, lit devices etc. Then the poem just loses it meaning completely, at least for me. Maybe I'm the only one who thinks this, but I don't think authors write literature with the purpose of it being savagely taken apart by teachers and students.

I don't. I'm also a poet. I have some publishing credits to my name and working my way up. What's there to hate about poetry?

Only ignorant people hate poetry... it's really awesome once you get the hang of it. Of course, you have to try first.
