It's not funny actually it a bit sad.
Back in the day the notion that something evil should happen to the person who willfully breaks covenant. An ancient covenant-sealing ceremony had persons walk between an animal divided in halves. the implication was that if they broke covenant, they deserved the same fate as the severed animal.
Times have changed for the better.
God will hold the wicked accountable.
